Volusia County describes driving on the sand at New Smyrna Beach as a tradition dating back to the early days of the automobile. That tradition covers only part of the coast, though. The driving ends well before the beach does. Go south past 27th Avenue and the traffic lanes stop, while the sand keeps running until it reaches Canaveral National Seashore.
